<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It seems to be the countdown to the big day starts earlier every year and as some one who has a November birthday, I've grown used to seeing decorations and lights up around the same time. There is something lovely about seeing it all especially with all the dull wet days we've been having. Also, having an enthusiastic 5 year old can't fail to raise a bit of festive cheer and excitement...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">If you need inspiration for gorgeous gifts to treat your friends and family with, come along to Dunchurch Village Hall this Saturday, 1 December from 9.30am to 12.30pm for a Christmas Fair, organised by the <a href="http://www.watchkennelsrgt.co.uk/" target="_blank">Rugby & Coventry Greyhound Trust</a>.</span><br />

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdT1E1FXMGKbF4xMiS8vvu5ter5wlQZYiPt85Hhvb1Eaye365-p0-V5Fw_pOTXNL0jWY8Q_4Y9DVAH2_6RIp25nloaS0cy2oP5X1UoX-oLfGUSSCvaj7ZnCUYYwunz6vn1yuU29aSJcWU/s1600/017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdT1E1FXMGKbF4xMiS8vvu5ter5wlQZYiPt85Hhvb1Eaye365-p0-V5Fw_pOTXNL0jWY8Q_4Y9DVAH2_6RIp25nloaS0cy2oP5X1UoX-oLfGUSSCvaj7ZnCUYYwunz6vn1yuU29aSJcWU/s400/017.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My coat, with poppy and regimental pin - how proud am I!!</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">With all the media coverage of Afghanistan and the presence of UK troops there, the public seem to have a really positive attitude and respect for the work and sacrifices made by the men and women involved. I've not known such support in all the 13 years I have been married - Mr Fuzzyfingers has been in the British Army for nearly 20 years...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I wanted to make a crochet poppy brooch this year as sadly the little paper one took too much of a battering on my coat last year. I searched <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/" target="_blank">Ravelry</a> (a fantastic knitting and crochet website for those of you who have not yet stumbled across it) for the various designs available and chose to make this <a href="http://naomibilgewaterdavis.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/poppy-for-remembrance.html" target="_blank">one</a>, designed by <a href="http://naomibilgewaterdavis.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Bilgewater</a>, who has kindly allowed me to reproduce it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbohYiYLgor15rsy81G6tS7eoGtkA02i6lgE3O6i8XhU_v0yax_lUvoqubBFzy1HWgnMgM29uVDiGur7s3jvqQ4xYavXA1bzx3ZVNz-jnJQy60haSSZuXkBRwjzGo5I0nUYvUMUum8gvE/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbohYiYLgor15rsy81G6tS7eoGtkA02i6lgE3O6i8XhU_v0yax_lUvoqubBFzy1HWgnMgM29uVDiGur7s3jvqQ4xYavXA1bzx3ZVNz-jnJQy60haSSZuXkBRwjzGo5I0nUYvUMUum8gvE/s320/005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">The shape is perfect and a true poppy bloom and the leaf (although not poppy like) compliments it perfectly. Yarn type, gauge and hook size are all really irrelevant as you can use whatever you like. I had the perfect poppy red in a chunky yarn so I used a 5mm hook to get a really dense fabric. For one option, I used a black button for the centre and the other had a black crochet circle which I then covered liberally with black sequins. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiJg6rrgIc74KNkuvAVQSiWDV1naL3QruCTyoasN4dVlQA7WwTHFApaHGzBdqKC2zNGQEAQz6Pb0HZKjr45D7cktwernpAPoqLBKK7-psl8c5v7BqdsHPDhnVeN46OWgtwAvXYDwxLYFM/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiJg6rrgIc74KNkuvAVQSiWDV1naL3QruCTyoasN4dVlQA7WwTHFApaHGzBdqKC2zNGQEAQz6Pb0HZKjr45D7cktwernpAPoqLBKK7-psl8c5v7BqdsHPDhnVeN46OWgtwAvXYDwxLYFM/s200/003.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">You can fasten to your clothing with a safety pin or a <a href="http://www.spellboundbead.co.uk/index.html" target="_blank">brooch pin</a> if you have them. I first sewed a <a href="http://www.spellboundbead.co.uk/product/6758/FN057S_Silver_Sieve" target="_blank">sieve</a> to the back of the flower and then bent the little lugs over the round brooch back ( with a tiny blob of superglue for added security).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiigI5lrSIwUqJQgZqrDIHIQH0yVQRfTU9CgvEUw0L4H0vsoZN3J5gJfoi12pOYguJL0plZO2qdfnrGO-ExaFLCjlwdVc-m-ZgFNCPO90k-dhSOZaNSzj_mvbr7nPN9v542BDHR31VkxD8/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiigI5lrSIwUqJQgZqrDIHIQH0yVQRfTU9CgvEUw0L4H0vsoZN3J5gJfoi12pOYguJL0plZO2qdfnrGO-ExaFLCjlwdVc-m-ZgFNCPO90k-dhSOZaNSzj_mvbr7nPN9v542BDHR31VkxD8/s320/002.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">And voila...one gorgeous poppy that is sure to get noticed for all the right reasons, donation made to the <a href="http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/" target="_blank">worthy cause</a> and many compliments. (Many thanks, Naomi!)</span><br />

It can only mean winter is fast approaching and its time to alter our clocks on Saturday night. The clocks are however going the right way to my mind - a whole extra hour in bed!! I have yet to get my 5 year old to take this piece of advice...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">If you need something to do with that whole extra hour on Sunday, you could always pop slong to the Benn Hall in Rugby for the Craft and Gift Fair between 10am and 4 pm. Come and have a browse and say hello and also get some inspiration for gifts, for Christmas or treat yourself...there is something for everyone including a craft are for children and a cafe area.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja08TycDg8W14Rvw9Hzhuk_CP5KB3ZDrJVaCLDPubTcVyvIN5wThXHTOyNowJiR5brkZOMvAXqQRqckdffOOttQPAvJHyyAwowX4pxQLIs_PuutFjfZea7Tu6nSxG2g96IV3p3VRo2sps/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja08TycDg8W14Rvw9Hzhuk_CP5KB3ZDrJVaCLDPubTcVyvIN5wThXHTOyNowJiR5brkZOMvAXqQRqckdffOOttQPAvJHyyAwowX4pxQLIs_PuutFjfZea7Tu6nSxG2g96IV3p3VRo2sps/s320/018.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Using a super easy construction method, and a simple
but effective stitch pattern, these textured hand huggers are super warm,
practical and versatile.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They hook up
really quickly and don’t require too much concentration – instant gratification
and able to watch tv too!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Perfect for
beginners and experts alike, you’ll be hooking a pair up to match different
outfits as well as friends and family. Using double knitting yarn and a 5mm hook, the pattern has the added benefit in Baby, Child and Adult sizes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">If you love what you see but are not a little craft-y person, then please get in touch through <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/FuzzyFingers/128380067261612?ref=hl" target="_blank">facebook</a> or email <a href="mailto:fuzzyfingers@btinternet.com">fuzzyfingers@btinternet.com</a> as I will gladly hook up a pair for sale...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I couldn't resist playing with colour and my favourite stripes ( plus it also helps to diminish the stash mountain!)... I am tempted to tinker with the pattern and gauge, and use 4 ply yarn to really have some fun and try and create some Missoni-style stripes...These also look fab in a solid colour or self-patterning yarn.</span><br />

I love autumn, the rapidly changing colours of leaves, the last flourish of flowers and the nights drawing in - I don't however like feeling cold, particularly my hands and feet. When I'm outside, I always have on a pair of comfy and practical wrist or hand warmers. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguEVpHf9cm-b1QoIGKnFjds3dLGcuo8xFNumWqD_3DmQHAoT5jwE5wIiaZzjzLaoKCnslS0JZLzuiTySU14xE8IlBIknDeR-g2dYfISjvpjkqY1fibnCmTVPU3sQqounx2SrR0w0_yCEQ/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguEVpHf9cm-b1QoIGKnFjds3dLGcuo8xFNumWqD_3DmQHAoT5jwE5wIiaZzjzLaoKCnslS0JZLzuiTySU14xE8IlBIknDeR-g2dYfISjvpjkqY1fibnCmTVPU3sQqounx2SrR0w0_yCEQ/s320/011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">These fingerless gauntlets are great as they are super cosy and warm yet amazingly practical as your fingers are not covered so are free to hold the steering wheel, school bags, dog leads, use your mobile, etc. With a slit for your thumb, they fit securely and snugly to keep you toasty. As someone who has dexterity and grip issues, I've found that simply keepng your wrists and the blood flow through this area warm, I don't suffer with the numbing sensation that being cold brings. In theory this reduces the amount of times I drop things, knock things over and breakages but remains to be proven in practise. Even my 5 year old calls me butter fingers at least once a day...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGA2Y6NxKtAhcnqCau3S8hywqiKoJLKXDHGmUTnL4o1ioBxvwkp263bqJ4fFr13uoaqNKYKcRg1gIcmXUGjHImIYFQPxm2fHL_L2QxZ6MFqGfaNQBfC30T8nCp4hyphenhyphenYejpk58BRLrCwlgM/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGA2Y6NxKtAhcnqCau3S8hywqiKoJLKXDHGmUTnL4o1ioBxvwkp263bqJ4fFr13uoaqNKYKcRg1gIcmXUGjHImIYFQPxm2fHL_L2QxZ6MFqGfaNQBfC30T8nCp4hyphenhyphenYejpk58BRLrCwlgM/s320/013.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Continuing on from the from the two free hat patterns, I am spreading a little more crochet love and have designed two super simple wrist warmer patterns - perfect for beginners and experts alike. There is plenty of scope for customising your handhuggers so let your imagination and creativity loose. I always tend to make my handhuggers a little longer through the wrist section so as to cover a bit more wrist and this is so easy to do. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">A simple pattern that gives instant gratification as they are a quick project with a simple pattern . Raid your yarn stash as they only use a small quantity of double knitting yarn. Lightweight and fairly stretchy they just feel so toasty - you can whip up a couple of sets. In fact I always have a pair in the 'glove' compartment (haha!) for those days when I forget to pick up a set or the weather changes while you're out...</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Baby version</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">In a multi size pattern, they're perfect for adults and even more practical for babies and children. I never was very good at steering tiny fingers into gloves so find that these are perfect. The little thumbhole means they stay on nice and securely and for those independent little ones, they can put them on themselves.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Enjoy the pattern and feedback gratefully received...</span><br />

Well I found a super bargain last week when doing the weekly shop at my local supermarket. Although I had noticed that they were stocking a small selection of <a href="http://www.redheart.com/node/8884" target="_blank">Red Heart</a> yarn (usually hard to find in the UK and I am very envious of all you crafty people Stateside!), I hadn't indulged mainly as I have been watching the pennies...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcW9jfFJZnXXEiGRE5DuYi58j1TGpa3ASNEd2d2rf-6ZngfBqd7IcS4I3t-t-culEkKYdUmkffnGnh98HnAxWIRnSxD4C0zEKVabRl0AwwWWcds_Z-mtXa4bcEKtB8PHSPS7nNr8kKl7I/s1600/shimmerheart.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcW9jfFJZnXXEiGRE5DuYi58j1TGpa3ASNEd2d2rf-6ZngfBqd7IcS4I3t-t-culEkKYdUmkffnGnh98HnAxWIRnSxD4C0zEKVabRl0AwwWWcds_Z-mtXa4bcEKtB8PHSPS7nNr8kKl7I/s320/shimmerheart.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Imagine my delight and disbelief when I saw that the oh so gorgeous (my favourite) green, just perfect for remaking and re-testing my own original design <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/aimiefuzzyfingers/seashell-cardi" target="_blank">Seashell Cardigan</a> with, was on sale at £1.19 (formerly £4.99!!) I scooped up the remaining six balls and added them to my trolley of fruit, veg, milk, bread, cat food, etc....It seemed wrong to be able to buy wool there but I wasn't complaining!!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Also, I returned to Ikea to purchase some much-needed stash storage in the form of <a href="http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70161320/" target="_blank">Hol</a> (I just love the names and whole concept), and felt I had to buy this <a href="http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50227261/" target="_blank">beautiful striped fabric</a>...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I could really see this as a skirt - the fabric is a lovely weight and has a real boutique-y feel as the stripes are slightly raised. I love stripes - versatile, a little bit quirky and most definitely unique. I could imagine the skirt to be a little 60s inspired, A- line with a deep inverted centre pleat. And then I remembered buying a dress pattern on Ebay a couple of months ago (for the drastic sume of £1.99!)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">It's an original Sunday People pattern number 436 - a 60s mod style dress with the option of full or 3/4 length sleeves(my favourite). As I bought the last on the bolt, roughly a metre and a half, I will have to make the top half of the dress and the sleeves in a plain black or charcoal cotton. What do you think?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">This is definitely top of the must make pile now the cooler weather is imminent but I <u>must</u> hem a dress and finish my Colette Hazel dress first. I really am trying to stick to my new habit of finishing something before cutting out the next. No time like the present and I'll strike while the iron is hot...</span><br />

It's gradually getting darker earlier, temperatures are dropping and the rain has returned, along with the wind. The boots are dusted off, polished up and back on my feet again. I tried to resist packing the summer shoes and sandals back in the wardrobe for as long as possible almost as though I'm clinging on and hoping for some warmth and sunshine. I don't know why I try to avoid doing this and resorting back to socks with my footwear - I have shockingly bad circulation which means I permanently have sub zero even on a hot day! I do however draw the line at wearing flip flops in the rain especially when we keep being deluged with monsOon conditions. What are people thinking...?</span><br />

I tend to make them a touch longer for me as I have realised if I keep my wrists good and toasty too, its better for me and keeps droppages/breakages to a more permissable level. Following on from my <a href="http://fuzzyfingersuk.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/cute-as-button.html" target="_blank">Flowertot Hat,</a> I have designed the Little Star hat for all little dudes. This is a funky star design based loosely on a granny design, (a pentagon this time and this lends itself to a great fitting beanie shape) and allows some fun to be had with making it as individual as the wearer. You can work it in one solid colour, double crochet the outline of the star to make it pop!, or crochet the whole star in a contrasting colour....have fun and play!<br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">This pattern is easy to scale up or down for adults or tinier tots by working in a different weight yarn (aran or 4 ply) as well as altering hook size. After crocheting for a while, you soon get to know whether you're a loose 'hooker' or a slightly more snug one!! Please feel free to let me know any comments, errors (ahem, I hope not) or feedback as I would love to know what you think. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">If you're not a crocheter and want to buy or order the hat, please message me through facebook or email me </span><a href="mailto:fuzzyfingers@btinternet.com"><span style="font-family: Georgia;">fuzzyfingers@btinternet.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Georgia;"> . May I also add that if you make any hats for sale then please please please credit the pattern to me, FuzzyFingers. There will also be a link to the pattern through Ravelry. Have fun and happy hooking!</span><br />

Nestled in the small cathedral town of Lichfield, Staffordshire, this family run business offers a shop filled to the brim (literally!) with beads of a myriad of colours as well as semi-precious stones, crystals and original design kits. Its a good shop there are many coffee shops and eateries in the area to allow you to peruse your purchases and realise that you have to go back and just a few more beads won't hurt....</span><br />

Life seems to have taken over and ther's never enough hours in the day - I'm sure you're all familiar with the same complaint! What with fending off the usual coughs and colds resulting when all the kids return to the classroom and share their bugs, I've been job hunting, preparing for a craft fair, amongst other things.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I've been meaning to make some baby and toddler hats for what seems like for ever and now we're having some gorgeous crisp and sunny autumnal weather here in the UK, I've been spurred on to designing some. I've even gone so far as writing up the pattern which is a new habit I need to most definitely keep up.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA8dBeHQwKA3Jg-Gh7OofaCbDxnbnhxaFl_MsPcEBRKzZMKDCYVmPzpQRvRGOFII1UIv7LhwQNMswpVbDyRTOVSsxn-Jb266mZiZdQfDG2ULTDfIyB_iXqZp2ljWSZibNIKTeb0e5iN3g/s1600/flowertot-hat.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA8dBeHQwKA3Jg-Gh7OofaCbDxnbnhxaFl_MsPcEBRKzZMKDCYVmPzpQRvRGOFII1UIv7LhwQNMswpVbDyRTOVSsxn-Jb266mZiZdQfDG2ULTDfIyB_iXqZp2ljWSZibNIKTeb0e5iN3g/s320/flowertot-hat.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Based on a flower set in a granny square, I've come up with the Flowertot hat (boy friendly version being worked on as we speak!). Worked in double knitting yarn on a fairly large hook, this is wonderfully soft and stretchy with the aim of being both stylish and practical. With the cute flower and slightly open top so baby is warm but not too hot, and the addition of a simple picot edge, this hat will be perfect for the upcoming colder months. This pattern is easy to scale up or down for adults or tinier tots by working in a different weight yarn (aran or 4 ply) as well as altering hook size. After crocheting for a while, you soon get to know whether you're a loose 'hooker' or a slightly more snug one!!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I've decided to make a few patterns available FREE - everyone's favourite word! - and share the crochet love. Please feel free to let me know any comments, errors (ahem, I hope not) or feedback as I would love to know what you think. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">If you're not a crocheter and want to buy or order the hat, please message me through facebook or email me <a href="mailto:fuzzyfingers@btinternet.com">fuzzyfingers@btinternet.com</a> . May I also add that if you make any hats for sale then please please please credit the pattern to me, FuzzyFingers. There will also be a link to the pattern through Ravelry. Have fun and happy hooking!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I felt like Christmas had come early this week. No sooner than mini Fuzzygingers returned to school when my eagerly awaited copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/101-Fabric---Fabric-Ways-Metre/dp/1446302199/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346954600&sr=8-1" target="_blank">101 Fabric by Fabric Ways to Sew a Metre</a> arrived along with <a href="http://www.tangled-yarn.co.uk/patterns/magazines/interweave-crochet-spring-2012/prod_919.html" target="_blank">Interweave Crochet Spring 2012</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/99-Little-Doilies-Patricia-Kristoffersen/dp/1574862332/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346954705&sr=8-1" target="_blank">99 Little Doilies</a>. Unfortunately not much was achieved for the remainder of the day as I had to (and I mean my life depended on it) look through them, drool over many things and add to my ever growing must make list.</span></div>

The school holidays have meant production rate has slipped (this means non-existent) but should improve now the new term has started. I do have acres of fabric ready to go so I must be disciplined and use what I have.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I follow several blogs and love <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/" target="_blank">Coletterie</a> - its just so inspirational and gives some insight into the designers' lives and their creative minds. I love the way retro patterns and detailing have been given a refreshing new twist. I also enjoy a new feature highlighting <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/sewing-challenges/good-habits-and-how-to-get-them" target="_blank">good sewing habits</a> and sticking to them, for example, not holding pins in your mouth (ouch - we're all guilty!). My new habit I'm adopting is to only cut out fabric for one project at a time - with the aim of eliminating a 'must finish/in progress' pile. It has been hard as it is all too tempting to have one larger project with a smaller quicker one on the go for some instant gratification. Who isn't guilty of this whether it be sewing, crochet, knitting...? The problem I've found is that those larger projects never seem to get finished...</span><span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Have you got any good habits, tips or hints you want to share? Get in touch and let me know as I'd love to hear...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Also what's at the top of your must make pile and how do you choose or prioitise?. ...Suggestions for this gratefully received...</span><br />

After taking stock of the situation and passing on what were mainly pristine clothes to friends, the drawers were looking a little bare.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXHgzCJ3Bc0LzEgR4jVnwfpuTEb8DRTCMtNnnroZZvgB_Whq1KnPNPW4dqpP0dmX6E0rEmk9RnKNNSVOzkbSLuobsUZi1mf7dHpYKQ0sYjgaZalGIRJsoK7d36s5K83IF54K2833oBCt8/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXHgzCJ3Bc0LzEgR4jVnwfpuTEb8DRTCMtNnnroZZvgB_Whq1KnPNPW4dqpP0dmX6E0rEmk9RnKNNSVOzkbSLuobsUZi1mf7dHpYKQ0sYjgaZalGIRJsoK7d36s5K83IF54K2833oBCt8/s320/002.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">If like me, your child is tall for their age (at 5 my little sweetpea is regularly mistaken for a 7 year old) you may have experienced this same trouble. I have to buy clothes in for 6-8 year old, depending on the shop of course and their sizing. Why do shops vary so much for children and adults alike? Another good reason to make your own as then your clothes fit like a dream!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">The problem I hit then is a lot of the clothing in larger sizes isn't really that great or suitable for a 5 year old. I am not a fan of novelty slogans, strappy tops and too short dresses. Snd don't get me started on the colours....</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg95qGF3wd8EXJIsZyim8mtG4cdNdmv2i3VeGHRKGxCuEWVSJT8z3z60tDYcieoDtnGC9zWxW-8zd3Vu3QUPKQRGpfO6l-_VKpkwvW_KWKwj6p9-Vz4ok_cnU4o6s_JpP4wxLe5k2Ipc6k/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg95qGF3wd8EXJIsZyim8mtG4cdNdmv2i3VeGHRKGxCuEWVSJT8z3z60tDYcieoDtnGC9zWxW-8zd3Vu3QUPKQRGpfO6l-_VKpkwvW_KWKwj6p9-Vz4ok_cnU4o6s_JpP4wxLe5k2Ipc6k/s320/004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Using this great book, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Absolutely-A-Line-Wendi-Gratz/dp/1600593771/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346246822&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Absolutely A-Line by Wendi Gratz</a>, I have made up a couple of simple but gorgeous A-line dresses that are bothe the perfect length and in lovely colours. This has also been a great way of using up some of my fabric stash of those bits that are too big to throw out but not quite big enough for adult garments. I can also tinker around with using some pretty trimmings and practise techniques too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPLXpuYood7YA5O3IaGx55qdzMTfd3ZoAERPVnp8RMxO9WzwTtM01hQroSjIZPSiEsN9Etm0KzgWyH_OhFdWq0-uvTaHVqxs3Mo16aDVxv4Gw_Bc2JNr7QLgJIdxU7fG2Kid2BTiLhNIo/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPLXpuYood7YA5O3IaGx55qdzMTfd3ZoAERPVnp8RMxO9WzwTtM01hQroSjIZPSiEsN9Etm0KzgWyH_OhFdWq0-uvTaHVqxs3Mo16aDVxv4Gw_Bc2JNr7QLgJIdxU7fG2Kid2BTiLhNIo/s200/005.JPG" width="200" /></a><span style="font-family: Georgia;">I love the vintage feel of the chambray skirt section completed with the heart motif bodice - the broderie trim just finishes it off nicely. This one is lined with the striped shirting and the back is closed with a hook and eye with a decorative button.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Restricted by a slightly smaller scrap of this lovely striped shirting (used for my first <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4964821948922072971#editor/target=post;postID=1982074560246789275" target="_blank">Sorbetto top</a> and bought for me by mum from a remnant pile), I made a shorter bodice section with a longer skirt. I finished this one with a simple ribbon loop and button closure.</span><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As I seem to have been rather short on crafting time and very few if any projects worked on let alone completed, I thought I would share a couple of thoughts with you....</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYtoSKTmADtZ9gJ9bdW5R6h8OkCVvkNQUD9K82o7nPa8vIi5jrYDKkjBdPTdZmpipFL0iyzAQNfC8C3JZoEJ_gTpORadgWUciV7JsKbIq5YSHxOQIfnTAenz_Hd0zHNU7PKkA-8oqx1q8/s1600/card.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYtoSKTmADtZ9gJ9bdW5R6h8OkCVvkNQUD9K82o7nPa8vIi5jrYDKkjBdPTdZmpipFL0iyzAQNfC8C3JZoEJ_gTpORadgWUciV7JsKbIq5YSHxOQIfnTAenz_Hd0zHNU7PKkA-8oqx1q8/s320/card.JPG" width="240" /></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> I bought this birthday card for a close friend but it was only when I got home that I read the little sticker on the cellophane saying 'Don't forget to pick up your envelope!' Thanks Asda for that bit it was really to my own gain - this card has been on my kitchen cupboard for the the past few years and never fails to make me smile. I just love the feeling of freedom and friendship and complete abandon - I quite often have this thought in mind particularly now with a young child in tow. You find that you view things from a whole different perspective - you certainly feel happier and take more enjoyment from the small things in life.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span> </div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">This is a more recent little ditty that I have seen and I love it - I love Roald Dahl and his work and I also think that there are many people nowadays that could do with bearing this, and the previous motto, in mind. When did everyone get so serious and self-absorbed and also so very British...its worth bearing in mind that it takes more facial muscles to frown than it does to smile. In my book this translates as more smiling = less wrinkles!</span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Have you got any little mottos, ditties or witticisms that you love or live by? If so, please share them and let me know .... </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">August 25th has and never will be the same again. As the years have gone by, it has sunk in more and more with me the extra special-ness of this. There is going to be one heck of a joint 50th and 18th birthday party!!</span><br />

A perfect 5 year old's party and completely simple, age appropriate fun. I keep trying to puzzle out parents' desire to outdo one another with parties, themes and number of children invited and also why there seems to be such an urgency and rush for kiddies to grow up....maybe I'm lucky in that my little one is more interested in Sylvanian Family figures, ponies, Polly Pockets and only a mild interest in computers and techno gadgets. Long may that continue!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The summer holidays seem to have flown by despite our rather testing weather conditions. There seems to have been barely two consecutive days that have been alike which makes planning activities a bit more tricky but we have made the most of the sunny spells.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">With swimming, cycling, picnics, trips to the park mxed with craft sessions, colouring, painting, watching films and good old imaginative play, we've filled our days and made the most of relaxing. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span> </div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Having had the opportunity to be a full time stay at home mum, I have absolutely loved the hols and treasured the time spent with my daughter after her Reception year at primary school. I had however forgotten quite how much energy they consume..</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Despite the fact that my crafting and output has been shockingly poor and my blog sadly neglected (apologies!), I have loved our summer and family time. My creative mind hasn't taken a break however and I have various sheets of paper scattered liberally throughout the house with inspired thoughts and ideas and pattern schematics that are crying out for attention.</span><br />

However, I seemed to have had a bit of a productive flurry with several projects finishing at once.</span><br />

</a><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I've been meaning to make <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/romantic-anytime-halter" target="_blank">this tunic</a> for some time now and decided to use this lovely spring green cotton ribbon yarn as I imagined the drape would be perfect and the stitches nicely defined. I made it a couple of inches longer by working three whole extra pattern repeats on the lower portions before beginning the shaping. It's safe to say that on the vast majority of patterns I do this to cater for my slightly longer body length. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> I loved the way the bust pieces are worked and the clever construction makes for a well fitting tunic.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span> <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Successful?</span> <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I think so although I would just slim down the collar to fit the shoulder straps better. I made a half collar to sit on front half of the tunic and attached it from the shoulder seams and the neck. As the main fabric was far more sheer than I thought when I bought it from an <a href="http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Minerva-Craft-Centre?_rdc=1" target="_blank">ebay shop</a> (the downside of internet shopping - isn't it disapponting sometimes?), I lined it with some navy polycotton and used interfacing for the collar. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I love the way the collar (so on trend at the moment) smartens the whole look of the top, making it versatile - smart enough for work, cute with jeans, work it any which way you like.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">With all the hype and media coverage, it can't have escaped anyone's notice that the <a href="http://www.london2012.com/" target="_blank">Olympics</a> have arrived. Even if you're not mad keen on sport, it's hard to ignore and not watch. There is such an amazing variety, there really is something for everyone, and if like me, I am amazed at the passion and just what these athletes are able to do. I have my favourites I'm glued to such as the eventing, tennis and gymnastics (I have no idea how the gymnasts make their bodies do those things!) but I have also found myself drawn into things like archery, swimming and diving.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Although there was a cynical part of me expecting some hiccups in true Brit style, I was amazed at the fantastic opening ceremony. Danny Boyle has such vision and cinematic skills it was a triumph, also supported by a truly excellent British soundtrack. Loved it! I also found having a nearly 5 year old helps as their enthusiasm is infectious and makes you view life from a whole different (and simpler) perspective.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XqpqL5ApmI199VDsMq91l-5UeZENggMTabhcM_4YpjZ4NlgEYdutu7vN5UPPPWHRYNKk_libjX_y0bq0leaAZBS6G-O8F-5FMAsp-HcZzO0KsVH2eoMwQXn2lyFDcvg8HhHI6uXpj70/s1600/flame.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XqpqL5ApmI199VDsMq91l-5UeZENggMTabhcM_4YpjZ4NlgEYdutu7vN5UPPPWHRYNKk_libjX_y0bq0leaAZBS6G-O8F-5FMAsp-HcZzO0KsVH2eoMwQXn2lyFDcvg8HhHI6uXpj70/s200/flame.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Even though it was a brief glimpse, it was great to see the Olympic flame as it travelled on its <a href="http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/" target="_blank">8000 mile 70 day journey</a> around the UK. Although it probably cost an astronomical amount and did little in the way of reducing our global carbon footprint, it did whet the appetite for the upcoming games.</span><br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Today has also seen the arrival of Lady Godiva in our little town of Rugby as part of the <a href="http://www.imagineerproductions.co.uk/" target="_blank">Godiva Awakes</a> project. This is a piece of public art as part of the celebrations of the UK hosting the Olympic Games in 2012. It is a six metre high puppet travelling by cycle power from Coventry to London and is amazingly beautiful in real life. Despite my explanation, the face of my daughter was priceless as she gracefully moved round the corner of the building.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp8jDeq58tblSJpa2UQhFEAUSUCCWm10RMQgT7PUK4tUrKa2PNnrbBFaMSb4_dQTatAoEv_PXKd_EJZC7D2JUgqkDeImYWK6AV_Mha0R2TR1m9_9mKXPnFvqqcDic51RXQMfG8vixKNFo/s1600/godivabehind.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp8jDeq58tblSJpa2UQhFEAUSUCCWm10RMQgT7PUK4tUrKa2PNnrbBFaMSb4_dQTatAoEv_PXKd_EJZC7D2JUgqkDeImYWK6AV_Mha0R2TR1m9_9mKXPnFvqqcDic51RXQMfG8vixKNFo/s320/godivabehind.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Here in this photo, the engineering of the huge puppet can be glimpsed as she playfully touched the top of the tree. I loved the fact that the team of operators aboard the vehicle were wearing Biggles style flying helmets and full length coats...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I have very little to update on the crafting front. Following our recent UK heatwave, I have lost my mojo a little - its hard to crochet when you fell like you're wearing a pair of vibrating oven gloves!! M.S. is renowned for being aggravated by overheating so I made the most of enjoying week 1 of the school holidays and catching up with a spot of painting, baking, playing at the park and the garden.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">How about you?...Hope the weather is being kind to you in your part of the world...</span><br />

(Inspired by the childrens programme 64 Zoo Lane.)</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir5pjPl6H-U4ra94iOiPdjZhyWHGDujjTSDLTl3mxE_NtqyJVW2mRBMhafWGMGy3cJN1YA5vRN0Gh-ZoZXuZWuCMlqGkbK5e2kP5asSqQlTYujZYbCu9R7ZlKDf8B2LtxJ-6aVGUhDvxQ/s1600/110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir5pjPl6H-U4ra94iOiPdjZhyWHGDujjTSDLTl3mxE_NtqyJVW2mRBMhafWGMGy3cJN1YA5vRN0Gh-ZoZXuZWuCMlqGkbK5e2kP5asSqQlTYujZYbCu9R7ZlKDf8B2LtxJ-6aVGUhDvxQ/s320/110.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I used the pattern from one of my favourite books, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/101-Great-Ways-Sew-Metre/dp/0715337785/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342604848&sr=8-1" target="_blank">'Sew a Metre'</a> . (Oh wow! on adding this link I have just made the fab discovery of a<a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/101-Fabric---Fabric-Ways-Metre/dp/1446302199/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1342604848&sr=8-2" target="_blank"> sequel</a>!) If I can recommend one book for budding crafters it is this one. As the name suggests, all the projects require one metre (or one yard as it is an American book) or usually less (great for stash busting too) and covers a wide variety of projects, from bags, skirts for kids, toys, home decor. Instructions are clear and precise and although requiring some sewing knowledge, I think it is a great book for beginners as well as more experienced sewists. As the projects are all fairly small scale, they are fairly quick and are a great way of practising techniques and skills.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">This is baby elephant from the book and although a little fiddly, if you take your time the end result is superb. I think he will look great in the nursery and will alsop be safe enough for young ones to play with. With this is mind, I purposefully made French knots for the eys as opposed to buttons, purely for safety. I am especially proud of the knots as previously have had no success with them - they both came out perfectly and I fully expected to have to turn him into a winkin</span><span style="font-family: Georgia;">g elephant! I can't offer any advice as I simply don't know how I achieved them!!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">After my recent success with Simplicity 2927, I definitely am going to dive in with the dress version in this gorgeous cotton sateen.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfGyqZ_h6bxyjRyIEgaZTxVXR8jNTicXngZyvKK8YGpMRyJK61JH2SkI9G3yw5zls17LnQ9_SKaR2rO_vTZgilLPOgBERhxX-XT1Ej7RzDeaOx_Vr6AGH2Kgvpi2ivlbGcbovIe9Fdr7o/s200/IMG_2386.JPG" width="200" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaD8zT9NXG5gS6x_nbAd1NQNRlD9lrVfWsTAgNH_GGKB6EZew3QiHQeU8Oh5U-LdYIFkHHa4YPFqOpUaEfuelff6v6LsZ1PZk6JtPq7491M8f99EPLOPf4wt3icSfELslKywLhteXg2EA/s1600/IMG_2387.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaD8zT9NXG5gS6x_nbAd1NQNRlD9lrVfWsTAgNH_GGKB6EZew3QiHQeU8Oh5U-LdYIFkHHa4YPFqOpUaEfuelff6v6LsZ1PZk6JtPq7491M8f99EPLOPf4wt3icSfELslKywLhteXg2EA/s200/IMG_2387.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Now I'm not sure if it's just me as a novice to sewing, or whether you experts too sometimes find it hard to visualise a fabric made into the garment.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I don't seem to have this trouble when it comes to yarn and a crochet pattern or beads for making jewellery. I love putting colours together and playing with different combinations but fabric...argh! I hope that this is one of those things that comes with experience and as long as I keep having more successes than failures, I've got too get better and more decisive, haven't I?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I do think all fabric shops should have a full length mirror and a dressmaking form so that you can drape the fabric to get a better visual effect. Maybe I'll drop it in as a suggestion in my local fabric shop...</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">After a bit of a project finishing session, I have made a list of projects to get done and as soon as the very last stitch is in this Simplicity 2927 dress, I am going to crack straight on with the <a href="http://www.colettepatterns.com/shop/hazel" target="_blank">Colette Hazel dress</a> in this gorgeous striped cotton....what do you think?</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD7QzT2TkCu9XHlgf4pHa5LRiR9i7BdK0qjIAsSZC40pEggbOOixESbqO1OxPUUQdOyl1q39JymIp3dtSdPZiyL-RfuI3oofx_uFK9af7GueWL_a7gZ_TUKjJLtsA19MPQl7y5jUYl0LA/s1600/vintagehaul.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD7QzT2TkCu9XHlgf4pHa5LRiR9i7BdK0qjIAsSZC40pEggbOOixESbqO1OxPUUQdOyl1q39JymIp3dtSdPZiyL-RfuI3oofx_uFK9af7GueWL_a7gZ_TUKjJLtsA19MPQl7y5jUYl0LA/s320/vintagehaul.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">After hunting for Roald Dahl books</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> in my local charity shops - I'd rather buy second hand than new for so many reasons- I kept coming out empty handed. I've been reliving my childhood by reading the genius Dahl books to my little girl at bedtime and fueling her imagination and desire to read. I'd forgotten how good they are...</span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1NHPp5ioSc7R0vmPtWZPdFSdNQGt2uvBoZ2JG0LwcAjk1nQvopeW6XYgJURmaMSq50fIrgER3C4lRknb26BFGE3BUsFHhzFbBbA4yNFmEymv-FknETyJnrZU04xmeeANdfK71yLsfUgM/s1600/vintasgevogue.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1NHPp5ioSc7R0vmPtWZPdFSdNQGt2uvBoZ2JG0LwcAjk1nQvopeW6XYgJURmaMSq50fIrgER3C4lRknb26BFGE3BUsFHhzFbBbA4yNFmEymv-FknETyJnrZU04xmeeANdfK71yLsfUgM/s200/vintasgevogue.JPG" width="150" /></a><span style="font-family: Georgia;">Anyway, my last stop where I felt sure I would succeed, drew a disappointing blank too. However, I did unearth in one of the back rooms of this my favourite Aladdin's cave, a varity of 60s and 70s crochet patterns (the pre-decimalisation prices are a clue if the designs aren't enough!), an 80s Vogue sewing pattern for a batwing top, pleated and tapered trousers and a child's culotte, jacket and skirt pattern. What a haul!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY36PkpeCby1gzPIxpDm29jY7VQ-Tm868va37ZgXp2NnVhjK2RahNf0QPGtSgQhS2B4AGfu_xE6VMalAAou-RRPHlstsoLzTNZRMVwAx5Lb9WtpgORwvHlbdiVxiRsE-in6AK4odIoU9E/s1600/culottes.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY36PkpeCby1gzPIxpDm29jY7VQ-Tm868va37ZgXp2NnVhjK2RahNf0QPGtSgQhS2B4AGfu_xE6VMalAAou-RRPHlstsoLzTNZRMVwAx5Lb9WtpgORwvHlbdiVxiRsE-in6AK4odIoU9E/s200/culottes.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I have scoured the web for a culottes pattern for myself and these look super easy and I'm hoping it may be possible to size it up based on the shape to fit me. Plus I have the option to make these for my little one as she already wears them for school.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Hmmm I think I will have to make a regular visit to this special place to see what other gems I can unearth....</span><br />

It is just so simple and offers endless possibilities by making slight variations. And even better still, this simple top is all over the high street but at least by making it yourself, or getting one made for you if you're not so crafty, you can have it in whatever colour you like. I've opted here for a bright rainbow cotton shirting - well I needed a taste of summer and I think this is the only way I can see it happening in the UK...</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNQGtH-D3IINjbv-YabkI_sQ-h0b7OdXumWYZvSb5me0X04HLD1_JVXhSDxYtQ_gnuofEzjOuEyCugBt0AM8uP0H4UfXAITcjpzcL60v5bOieDXVugtOpS4N_aUM5o8pG_cYTFcXdhh_g/s1600/114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNQGtH-D3IINjbv-YabkI_sQ-h0b7OdXumWYZvSb5me0X04HLD1_JVXhSDxYtQ_gnuofEzjOuEyCugBt0AM8uP0H4UfXAITcjpzcL60v5bOieDXVugtOpS4N_aUM5o8pG_cYTFcXdhh_g/s320/114.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I am loving <a href="http://www.colettepatterns.com/" target="_blank">Collette patterns</a> and have two dresses that I aim to make, the first being <a href="http://www.colettepatterns.com/shop/hazel" target="_blank">Hazel</a> (more on that a later date). I follow a number of blogs and <a href="http://colleterie.com/">Colleterie.com</a> is one I check several times a week - it is an excellent source of tips, techniques, design ideas and also regularly features people's creations. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="clear: right; float: right; font-family: Georgia; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" closure_uid_vbupft="5" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2zX5aItfvowlpajlcrrQawLWZFC_oyTxqdrpcAtKun4xovo-sq26cpegLEYau2Vfw_Ilki4WhJI-4xqFVgQYUHq05IvMZpkvwGkoZXzcF-j0sW46xl3mwsBwCQEDApev9wXZNu5VKCcI/s200/IMG_2161.JPG" width="200" /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Each time I've made this top, I make a slight variation - a little longer in the body, slightly less cutaway at the front of the armhole and this time was no exception.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I'm not a fan of bias tape - its tricky to use, time consuming to use to get the best result, varies enormously in quality. So I wanted to make this top but without the bias tape.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfujDUrHUSG_BBF2Yc9Je_jj9yf2E65kzcxo69kPAqCvpiKoWVW7Ud5b8HR6fZk4Vl7lMrRbo5ifdfDGh_u8kk10kHNv8_cIjdlbysX09MaOEq2kFoUbsC_TNlcuCqs_roEJ0fghUimT4/s1600/108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfujDUrHUSG_BBF2Yc9Je_jj9yf2E65kzcxo69kPAqCvpiKoWVW7Ud5b8HR6fZk4Vl7lMrRbo5ifdfDGh_u8kk10kHNv8_cIjdlbysX09MaOEq2kFoUbsC_TNlcuCqs_roEJ0fghUimT4/s320/108.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I decided to use front and back facings to make the edges super neat clean and crisp and this also provides some lining to the bust. I guess on a more sheer fabric you could simply do a full lining...</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Rather than doing darts on the inner fabric (no reason why you couldn't though), I used the front template and cut the facing fabric at the same level as the darts. I also folded the template so the front pleat was omitted, purely to save fabric. I repeated the same process to get the back facing cut and also cut both the back facing and back piece as two separate pieces rather than cutting on the fold as directed. After sewing the darts and the pleat, the shoulder seams on the main fabric and the facing were next. <span style="font-family: Georgia;">This has given me more ideas now as I can see this top with a feature button fastening at the top of the back seam - mainly for added decorative interest but would also help going over the head, especially if I were to make it a slightly closer fit. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I told you the possibilities are endless...even adding the links in this post has given me two more ideas for future versions!! ...just a shame I can't spend endless hours sewing...</span>FuzzyFingershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07067581253587687902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4964821948922072971.post-42066441744146275942012-06-20T20:23:00.000+01:002012-06-20T20:23:46.101+01:00Fuzzy feeling<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Every once in a while, something happens that makes me smile and think that there are some lovely people out there...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Like a lot of crafty people, I love websites like <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/" target="_blank">Ravelry</a> and <a href="http://pinterest.com/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> and visit them daily. As well as being able to download patterns, they are valuable sources of inspiration as well as being a gallery to showcase your own work.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Recently, I was contacted by a fellow 'hooker' (hmm, probably not the best choice of words!) who had seen my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/aimiefuzzyfingers/the-little-cardigan-crochet-version" target="_blank">gorgeous cardi</a> and wondered if I could share the pattern. Ironically, I had done the exact same thing a few months ago as the pattern booklet is no longer available, and instead of copying the pattern, <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/VintChic" target="_blank">VintChic</a> sent me the booklet from the USA. So when <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/youbetterbehave" target="_blank">youbetterbehave</a> aka Josy, asked me for the pattern, I was only too glad to return the favour and the pattern was soon winging itself back Stateside. To return the favour, Josy offered to send me any patterns that I had had my eye on. After browsing the current issue of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/vogue-knitting-crochet-2012" target="_blank">Vogue Crochet</a>, I asked for copies of the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/09-cowl" target="_blank">cowl</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/36-cardi-shawl" target="_blank">cardi shawl</a>. You people in the States are very lucky as you have much better crochet magazines the we do...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Imagine my delight when my super cool dude postie (seriously- always has his mirrored aviators on) bought me this tempting package to my door. On opening, as well as a lovely note from Josy thanking me for the pattern, there were the two promised patterns PLUS two beautiful hanks of <a href="http://www.berroco.com/shade_cards/peruvia_sh.html" target="_blank">Berroco Peruvia</a> in the most beautiful shade of teal. I was speechless - how kind! The cogs are turning as to what to use this treat for...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How is it that someone thousands of miles away can be so kind yet people on the street struggle to smile and say hello? I love Ravelry and can't recommend it enough for anyone, whether you are new to knitting and crochet or an old hand, you're bound to find something you love. I love the sense of community as all the members are of the same mind...</span><br />

Simplicity 2927<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I couldn't help but smile when my husband recently said, "That's a nice top - where did you get that?"</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRiP7_NCKcUac3E9aFbgE9rSAgsDS5f_LlefZCBLap8GvrRxDVOMspupHQszPfjjMIQoESchZJQBh1g8QlVfuIghFNHUd1ODvNY_GIyUu0SeMuLv401hOpChkQuGuzepLii1yQp1af-_4/s1600/IMG_2429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRiP7_NCKcUac3E9aFbgE9rSAgsDS5f_LlefZCBLap8GvrRxDVOMspupHQszPfjjMIQoESchZJQBh1g8QlVfuIghFNHUd1ODvNY_GIyUu0SeMuLv401hOpChkQuGuzepLii1yQp1af-_4/s320/IMG_2429.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Such a good feeling to say "I made it", coupled with the knowledge that the garment is unique. Never again will you suffer that moment when you realise someone else is wearing the same outfit. On the few occasions that has happened to me (two that I can remember), I have had to have a wry smile and its really not that bad - ultimately someone else has similar tastes to you and that can't be a bad thing.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I'm not sure who was more proud of my rather amateur sewing prowess - it wasn't me that kept pointing out to friends and family that I'd made it! However I do feel proud that I can achieve a high quality item and to receive such lovely compliments is a fantastic boost. Someone also told me recently that they used to love making things but didn't have the courage or the confidence to wear it. Such a shame and I urge anyone who isn't quite sure - do it and wear it with pride!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I love this top and now on its success, I will crack on and make the dress version next - this was a bit of a trial run and a valuable one at that. The cool and crisp linen was a dream to work with and gives the top a lovely vintage feel - bought online <a href="http://www.cheapfabrics.co.uk/" target="_blank">here</a> last year. Instead of using a hook and eye at the back of the neck, I used a small button with a crochet loop to close. I chose this over a hook and eye fastening to help disguise the fact that the left corner above the zip is a teensy weeny bit higher than the right - I am talking about 3mm. I think this is down to me needing a lot more practise with sewing in zips. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now that I have started to make clothes, I can't help but be super critical when shopping. Sometimes its the fabric quality, the price to quality of work ratio (higher the price the lower the quality) and I have even seen really scrappy finishing on items in prime window position. Although I am only a novice, both my successes and what the high street can offer are spurring me on to creating more items for my wardrobe. Watch this space...</span><br />
